AirAsia offers free seats for KL-Perth

From midnight Thursday, 5,000 free seats will be available for the Perth-Kuala Lumpur flights via AirAsia X.

The free seats up for grabs are for the travel period between Nov 2 and April 30, 2009.

AirAsia X director Datuk Tony Fernandes said the offer was only available for booking on Friday and Saturday and it was in conjunction with the launch of the long haul budget airline's new direct service from KL to Perth, Western Australia.

"From midnight today, you can try to get free seats to Perth. I've already received 27 SMSes from Malaysians and Australians in Perth asking what time they can start booking," he told reporters Thursday after the launch of the long haul destination to Perth here.

He said the average fare to Perth would be under RM400 including fuel surcharge and the return fare for business class seats was about RM2,000.

"Many people have been asking when we are going to Perth. It has the largest Malaysian student population and Malaysians and Singaporeans living there. Our dream of turning Malaysia into a hub for people flying around South-East Asia destinations is also becoming a reality."

Perth is the airline's third international destination following its launch to Hangzhou, China in February this year with five return flights per week and to Gold Coast Australia in November last year with four return flights.

AirAsia X will offer six return flights per week between Perth and KL, and is already planning to increase the flights to daily return flights by March 2009. The airline’s new wide-bodied Airbus A330 aircraft will service the route.

To date, AirAsia X has carried over 50,000 guests between Gold Coast and Kuala Lumpur, and 30,000 between Hangzhou.

Maria Sharapova sizzles against helpless Henin

Maria Sharapova inflicted world No.1 Justine Henin's first loss since Wimbledon last year with a stirring 6-4 6-0 victory to advance to the semi-finals of the Australian Open.

The Russian No.5 seed was at her clinical best against an out-of-sorts Henin, who had not been beaten for 33 matches - a streak that began after her semi-final loss to Marion Bartoli at the All-England Club.

Since then, Henin has been the dominant player on the WTA Tour, winning five tournaments including the US Open and the season-ending Tour Championships.

But she was ineffectual against Sharapova, who smashed 30 winners to just 11 to claim victory in one hour 38 minutes.

Sharapova was clearly in the zone from the outset, breaking Henin in her opening service game before taking a 5-3 lead in the first set.

Somehow, Henin fought her way back into the contest to take it to 5-4. Sharapova then had three set points on the Belgian's serve before finally converting on the fourth to close out the set in just over an hour.

Henin was unable to find any sort of rhythm on serve as Sharapova continually pounded winners from the back of the court, racing to a 4-0 lead before winning the set to love.

She will now take on Serbian third seed Jelena Jankovic after she ousted Serena Williams earlier in the day.

New "Happy" Prepaid Mobile Service

"Happy", that is the name of the new no-frills mobile service. Happy prepaid service allows customers to call any network at 1sen per second to a maximum of 99sen per call while SMSes will be at 10sen per SMS. Happy is the brainchild of four "rebel" from Digi who felt Malaysian mobile customers should have one straightforward plan and not have to pay for the "extras" they didn't need.

The Happy network will be riding on Digi's infrastructure so essentially, you'll still be getting a Digi coverage. The Happy line will use the 014 suffixes and starter packs star at RM5 with RM2 worth of calls. Happy is also giving their customer longer lasting line with validity going for 60 days starting from the last reload, regardless of the reload sum.

My Chemical Romance KL Concert

My Chemical Romance hits its stride and put on an unforgettable show for the fans at Stadium Merdeka.

I and my friends arrive there at 4pm but all the car park around there was full. After that, we managed to find one space. Around that, there are many stalls start selling the shirt of chemical romance and drinks&food. But the main sponsor of this concert got the biggest stalls (Xpax) start rock the mood of MCR fans outside the stadium when they all start queuing for enter the stadium.

Why we can't find a carpark outside the stadium because all had been park by police car from Dang Wangi branch. They really din think about other people feelings. All the police always think they are right all the times. Like 60 police car park at that side outside the stadium and who said government don't have "Money".

After that, all the MCR fans start to enter the stadium based on their ticket gate number like RM103 Gate4...they start pushing each other when the gate are opened.

Around 8pm, MCR arrived at that stage..All MCR fans start screaming like hell...

Gerard to hand Way(MCR frontman) declared "We didn't come here to hang out? We came here to Get Down!" during the sunday night at Stadium Merdeka.

They basically performed all the songs from the lastest album like This is how I disappear, Sleep, Mama, Dead!, Teenagers, The Black Parade..the last songs before the concert end was Famous Last Words. Got other songs from the second album is Helena and I'm not okay..That was nice and rock...

While the concert was on going, some things was happened like got people start crossing the gate to front zone but finally also caught by the army who is on duty there.

On that time, there also slightly rain but not so heavy...Hitz Fm called My Chemical Radio...Then, We should MCR to Must Cause Rain.

The concert end at around 10.30pm. That was early that I was not expected to be..Nevermind the concert was rock and happening. I hope to see them again.

240 detained in Malaysian police crackdown on ethnic Indians

Kuala Lumpur: Malaysian police on Sunday detained over 240 ethnic Indians and used tear gas and water cannon to crush a banned demonstration by the community in support of a US$ 4 trillion lawsuit that blames Britain for their economic woes.

Thousands of slogan-shouting demonstrators, a few carrying photos of Mahatma Gandhi, had gathered outside the Petronas Twin Towers, world's second tallest building, before marching towards the British High Commission here.

The police fired tear gas shells and water canons at the protesters, who retaliated by throwing bottles but were beaten and dragged into trucks, witnesses said, adding the protest continued for eight hours.

Police said over 240 people were detained, but half of them were later released.

The rally call had been given by Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf), a non-governmental organisation, which wanted to hand over a memorandum signed by thousands of ethnic Indians demanding Queen Elizabeth II to appoint her counsel to represent them in a class action suit against the British Government for bringing Indians to the then Malaya as "indentured labourers" and exploiting them.

The suit claimed that the community was facing discrimination and marginalisation to this day, an allegation denied by the Malaysian government.

Police had earlier obtained an unprecedented court order prohibiting the rally and on Friday arrested three Indians from the Hindraf and charged them with sedition for making what the authorities called seditious speeches on November 16.

Ethnic Indians make up eight per cent of the population.

Only took 74 days to reach milestone

It took just 74 days for Apple to sell one million iPhones. Steve Jobs' target of the Apple iPhone taking 1 per cent of the mobile phone market looks set to become reality.

Apple sent out a press statement this afternoon announcing that it sold the millionth Apple iPhone yesterday. Since its introduction in the US on 29 June, the iPhone has sold better than even Apple's predictions. For example, it took two years for the iPod to reach the same milestone.

Toshiba crams 160GB onto 1.8-inch HDD

Same sized disks as in new Apple iPod Classic

Toshiba today introduced new 80GB and 160GB 1.8-inch hard disk drives, the same size drives as those in the new Apple iPod Classic, announced yesterday.

The new Toshiba MK1626GCB 160GB model is the highest-capacity 1.8-inch drive on the market with a CE-ATA interface, Toshiba claims. Such drives are suitable for portable media players such as the new Apple iPod Classic, and the near identical launch date for the two products is unlikely to be just a coincidence.

The drives are expected to be used in digital audio players, digital video recorders, PDAs, computer notebooks and other portable devices.

The 160GB Toshiba MK1626GCB disk drive uses a dual-platter design and measures 8mm high, while the 80GB Toshiba MK8022GAA model features a single-platter design and is 5mm high. Both units spin at 3600rpm and have 15 millisecond seek times. The drives can transfer data at up to 52Mbps (160GB) and 66Mbps (80GB) respectively.

No prices or availability dates were mentioned at this stage but the drives are likely to surface this side of Christmas.

Girl, eight, swims 17km across Penang channel

PENANG: The strong sea currents failed to deter her but the jellyfish nearly did.

Still, eight-year-old Mardiana Abdul Rahim managed to overcome her fear of the stinging creatures to become the youngest person to swim from Seberang Prai to Penang island.

With her brother Muhammad Riyadh, 14, and sister Maisarah, 13, the siblings from Malacca completed their swim within five to seven hours.

Muhamad Riyadh also made it into the Malaysia Book of Records as the youngest male swimmer to swim long distance in the country.

After a light breakfast, the siblings started their swim at Kuala Muda near Kepala Batas at 8.15am.

Muhammad Riyadh covered 13.1km in five hours 25 minutes to arrive at Tanjong Tokong at 1.51pm while Maisarah took six hours and 31 minutes over the distance.

Mardiana took seven hours and 31minutes as she had to detour due to strong currents and covered 17.1km.

Asked if she would swim across the channel again, Mardiana replied: “Only if there is no jellyfish.”

Youtube videos now with extra advertising

Video-sharing site to get interactive ads on top of clips

Until now, the worst thing about video-sharing website YouTube has long been the inane comments that are so bad they're almost reason enough to avoid the site. To that we can now add extra advertising, thanks to owner Google's decision to overlay commercials on the videos themselves.

Starting this week, video clips from the 1,000-plus YouTube content partners may feature advertising on the bottom fifth of the screen similar to tickers on television news shows or promotions sometimes used during other broadcasts.
This video is brought to you by...

The overlays appear 15 seconds into a clip and last for 10 seconds, during which time they can either be ignored or - as Google hopes - clicked on. Clicking pauses the video and initiates a full-size commercial instead, after which, the original video resumes.

Advertising is initially limited to content partners to avoid paid-for commercials appearing on unlicensed videos or content on which advertisers would not wish to see their products. This should avoid problems similar to the BNP row that has caused problems for Facebook.

With an eye on the £2 billion such video advertising is projected to be worth by 2011, Google will clearly be banking on YouTube users not being turned off by the adverts. Now, if only they could do something about those comments.

Apple reveals iPod touch, iPhone Price drop

Up to 160GB of storage on some models, touchscreen on others

Apple has given its iPod range a major overhaul this evening - a move that could kill of poorly specced rivals like the Microsoft Zune.
The biggest news of the night was the launch of the iPod touch - effectively an iPhone without the phone bits inside. Apple CEO Steve Jobs half-jokingly called it "one of the seven wonders of the world."
The iPod touch has the same 3.5-inch widescreen display as its cellular sibling, but measures 8mm thin. It also has built-in 802.11b/g Wi-Fi and between 8GB and 16GB of storage depending on model. Pricing is set at £199 for the 8GB version and £269 for the 16GB version.
Battery life has been set at 22 hours for music, five hours for video.
iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store
Jobs also introduced the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store to accompany the iPod touch. You can access the Store direct from the iPod touch's interface simply by touching its icon on the front screen.
The iTunes Wi-Fi Store itself has just four buttons: Featured, Top Tens, Search and Downloads. Any songs you download can be synchronised back to iTunes the next time you're at your PC or Mac. You can also use your iPod to purchase songs from the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store via the Starbucks coffee chain.
Jobs also announced a $200 (£100) price cut to the US-only 8GB Apple iPhone, bringing its price down to $399. The less popular 4GB version has been discontinued.
Apple iPod nano
The other big news of the night was the introduction of a new iPod nano. The new version will be shorter and wider than the current version, and will be available in five colours - black, white, green, blue and a Product [Red] version, some of the proceeds from which will go to AIDS charities in Africa,
The new model has a revamped user interface that includes Cover Flow, an all-metal body, video playback and games. Apple is even bundling three games for free, including one which Steve Jobs demonstrated called Vortex.
The new iPod nano also has a larger, brighter display, measuring 2-inches across. Steve Jobs says it has the highest pixel density of any display that Apple has shipped in an iPod.
The new iPod nano also has vastly improved battery life of up to 24 hours music playback and five hours video playback. The nano also has more storage - you can buy the 4GB version for £99, the 8GB version for £129.

iPod classic
However the iPod nano hasn't entirely replaced the 5.5G iPod. It's been revamped as the iPod classic which will now come in two flavours - one with an 80GB hard disk drive, and a second with 160GB - enough for 40,000 songs. Pricing and other details stack up like this:

*The iPod classic 80GB will have 30 hours of battery life with audio playback and 6 hours with video playback. It will be available for £159.

* The iPod classic 160GB version has 40 hours' battery life with audio playback and 7 hours with video playback. it will sell for £229.
Both now sport thinner, all metal case and will be available in both black and silver. There's no such thing as a white iPod anymore.
Apple iPod shuffle
The only real disappointment was the lack of any real change to the iPod shuffle.
The new version merely gets a refresh with five new colours: Product [Red], plus silver, blue, turquoise and green models, All have 1GB capacity and are available for £49.
Ringtones and more
Steve Jobs says a new version of iTunes will be launched today. It will support all of the new iPods and add a new feature - the ability to download and create ringtones for the Apple iPhone. Ringtones cost 99 US cents each in addition to the cost of the song itself. There will be 500K participating songs from next week.
Jobs also said that 600 million copies of iTunes have been downloaded since launch, with over 3 billion songs and 95 million TV shows sold through the iTunes Store. He also said that the Store takes pole position in every one of the 21 countries in which it operates.

ATI delays launch of DirectX 10 graphics card

Launch event cancelled; R600 now bound for Q2

ATI has delayed the launch of its long-awaited DirectX 10 compatible graphics processor, codenamed R600. A launch event was scheduled for March in Amsterdam, but a breathless PR representative contacted Tech.co.uk this evening to say the whole thing has been called off.

Subsequently the PR, who acts for ATI's parent AMD, sent us the following prepared statement:

"To continue to align our strategy with current market opportunities, AMD has changed the launch plan for R600. We are going to deliver a competitive configuration to market with an extremely attractive combination of performance, features and pricing, targeting a broader market segment in Q2."

AMD will take a battering over the delay in delivering any compatibility with DirectX 10; the graphics engine behind Windows Vista. Many had tipped it to beat arch-rival Nvidia - still having problems making its dual-card (SLI) setups compatible with DirectX 10.

However, Nvidia's single-card GeForce 6, 7 and 8-series setups now work fine with Vista - a WHQL-certified driver update was released yesterday .

ATI-devotees will hope that the delay means the company will come to market with finalised drivers and GeForce 8800GTX-quashing performance. However, timing will be tight, with Nvidia believing it will have final DirectX 10 SLI-compatible drivers in April.

The 'targeting a broader market segment' part of the statement could also indicate ATI will launch the R600 series with more than one processor spec on offer rather than waiting a few months for the mid-range and low-end cards to kick in.

Leaked information last week pointed towards two different versions of the R600-powered board - one for partners around 24cm, another for system builders that could be as much as 30cm in length. The same sources also quoted a whopping power consumption for the latter of 270W.

Several online sources have indicated over recent days that ATI would experience problems the delivering R600 boards to its partners this quarter but few had predicted a wholesale delay.

Cut in airport taxes from June

PUTRAJAYA: Airport taxes at the country's low-cost carrier terminals (LCCTs) in Sepang and Kota Kinabalu will be slashed, for both domestic and international travels, from June 1.

For both the LCCTs in Sepang and Kota Kinabalu, the airport tax for domestic travel will be reduced from RM9 to RM6.

For international travel, the airport tax will be reduced to RM25 from RM41 (at the LCCT in Sepang) and from RM51 (Kota Kinabalu).

Airport charges at the KLIA main terminal and other airports in the country would remain at RM9 for domestic passengers and RM51 for international passengers.

DELL Step Into Linux

Seems that Dell will once more package Linux into their system, more specifically the Ubuntu version. According to Dell Spokesman Kent Cook, come end of May, will begin selling some consumer-focused laptop and desktop models with Ubuntu's new "Feisty Fawn" version of Linux installed.

This is not the first time that Dell has attempted to package Linux together with its products. In 1999 and 2000 Dell sold Linux based PC and notebooks but did an abrupt turn in 2001 due to insufficient demand. This may be due to the fact that Linux was not exactly consumer friendly back then and thus the lack of demand for such a system.

However, Linux today has evolved into more consumer friendly versions, which makes it ripe for Dell to once again packaged Linux into its consumer systems. The Linux move will be initially started in the US.

From what people can see, although the Perodua Viva is based on the previous generation Daihatsu Mira, Perodua has facelifted it's styling to mirror the latest model Daihatsu Mira recently launched in Japan.

Actually Perodua Viva is a Kelisa and Kancil Replacement Model, replacing it’s 13-year old Kancil and 5-year old Kelisa models, reported The Edge Daily. The Perodua Kancil has been somewhat of an asset to the Malaysian automotive industry, and Malaysians themselves, allowing low-income families who use motorcycles to upgrade to a 4-wheeled vehicle due to it’s low entry price.

Some specifications of the new car have been released by Perodua - the 1.0 liter Kancil Replacement Model will come in both manual and automatic transmissions, but there will also be manual-only variants in both 660cc and 850cc form. All 3 engine variants will feature electronic fuel injection and DVVT dynamic variable valve timing.

Meanwhile, Perodua has also learned from the Perodua Myvi’s overwhelming runaway success - instead of stockpiling only 1,000 units for the launch orders which was done for the Myvi, the Perodua Kancil and Kelisa Replacement Model would have between 2,000 to 3,000 cars stockpiled to cater to demand. Production capacity will be 7,000 units monthly.

Yahoo shares up on Microsoft talk

Shares in Yahoo have risen by as much as 14% upon media reports suggesting the internet firm had been approached by Microsoft about a potential tie-up.

US reports suggested Microsoft was keen to pair up with Yahoo in a deal which could be worth up to $50bn (£25bn).

Persistent talk of a possible deal has surrounded the two firms in recent years, with reports claiming the duo held informal merger talks last year.

Neither would comment, calling the new reports "rumours and speculation".

Yahoo shares closed trading up 9.9% at $30.98 after reports of a possible tie-up with Yahoo in the Wall Street Journal and the New York Post.

But Microsoft's shares fell by more than 1% on the news.

'Incompatible'

One analyst said a takeover of Yahoo was unlikely given the huge sums required but some form of co-operation in areas such as advertising was more conceivable.

Intel Releases Super Energy-Efficient Xeon Processors

Intel Corporation has announced two energy-efficient 50-watt server processors that represent a 35- to nearly 60-percent decrease in power from Intel's existing 80- and 120-watt quad-core server products.

As companies increasingly focus on reducing electricity bills and cooling costs associated with their computing needs, these new processors, requiring just 12.5 watts of power for each of the four cores or processing engines, deliver similar performance yet set a new standard in energy efficiency.

Intel has introduced 11 server, workstation and desktop PC quad-core processors since November.

Servers based on the new low-power, quad-core processors are designed for dense Internet datacenters, blade servers and industries such as financial services where the scale and density of servers are highly sensitive to power, real estate and cooling costs. The potential for cost savings by replacing aging infrastructure with Quad-Core Intel® Xeon® processors and deploying virtualization technology can be as much as $6,000 per year over the lifetime of each server based on Intel's own evaluations.**

In addition, these new processors represent a nearly ten-fold improvement in power consumption per core in just 1½ years.*** The company attributes this collective success to the merits of its breakthrough Intel® Core™ microarchitecture and aggressive design execution.

"Intel has really responded to the industry's call to deliver unprecedented breakthroughs for data center energy efficiency," said Kirk Skaugen, vice president of Intel's Digital Enterprise Group and general manager of the Server Platform Group. "IT managers can get outstanding quad-core Intel Xeon server performance today and at no premium to dual-core products. We are thrilled to drive further records in lower power consumption and we won't stop here. Our engineers and architects are passionate about delivering even more power-saving innovations down the road."

Intel is introducing two low-voltage processors: the Quad-Core Intel Xeon processor L5320 and L5310. The new 50-watt quad-core processors operate at 1.86 GHz and 1.60 GHz, respectively, feature a unique 8 megabytes (MB) of on die cache for faster memory data communication and run on dedicated 1066 MHz front side buses. In 1,000 unit quantities the L5320 is priced at $519 and the L5310 at $455.

These processors can be coupled with Intel's existing "Bensley" server platform and have been designed to be "drop-in" compatible with the existing Dual-Core and Quad-Core Intel Xeon processor families.

Servers based on these new processors are expected to be available worldwide over the next few months from Acer, Dell, Digital Henge, Fujitsu Siemens, HP, HCL, IBM, Rackable Systems, Samsung, Verari, Wipro and other companies.

A quick brief around Windows Vista

Software giant Microsoft releases Windows Vista to consumers on 30 January.

The new version of the venerable Windows operating system has been more than five years in development and much hangs on its success.

Below is a brief tour of Vista's new looks and a guide to some of the key features in the software.

A new look

One of the biggest changes in Vista will be obvious as soon as users set eyes on the main display.

Gone are the flat Windows panes in favour of a 3D display called Aero. The flexibility of this will be familiar to anyone who has played a recent PC game. In this inteface the separate panes for each program you have running can be displayed in different ways and at different angles. They can even be stacked or staggered.

As the interface is hardware driven if users do not have a decent graphics card they may not see all the improvements. To get the most out of it Microsoft recommends a graphics card that works with DirectX9 and has a minimum 128MB of graphics memory.

Without this graphical ability, Windows Vista will look very like Windows XP does now.

Graphic effects

The improvements in technology behind the Vista interface makes possible all kinds of special effects that can be applied to the Windows you have open.

For instance, Windows no longer need to be solid and the edges of each pane can be made translucent to give a better idea of what lurks behind the program you are working on.

Other changes to the main interface include live thumbnails for each application on the main desktop taskbar. Hover over minimized applications and the thumbnails will pop up giving you an idea of what is happening with that program.

Helping hand

In some respects Windows Vista helps Microsoft catch up with many of the technologies that rivals, such as Apple and Google, have been touting long before now.

A case in point is the instant search tool found in Vista. Searching in Windows XP is an exercise in frustration and the only way to do it better was to download and install an add-on program.

With Vista the search tools are constantly running, logging what you are doing and what you are doing it with. The result is that, as you type in search terms, Vista starts populating a list of what you might be looking for.

Not only can you search for files you can look for applications too. No longer do you have to remember where something is on a menu, the search tool will take you there. It is an acknowledgement of how important searching has become.

The search tool can be refined to only look for applications, specific file types or just on the net.

Side swipe

Another feature seen for the first time in Windows but long ago in other applications, such as Apple's OS X software, is the sidebar.

As its name implies this is a section of the main desktop that can be populated with a variety of small, helpful applications. In the sidebar Vista users will be able to have weather watching programs running, keep live "to do" lists or keep an eye on any feeds they want to monitor.

Microsoft expects that many amateur coders will produce extras for the sidebar just as people have produced widgets for Mac OS X and extra programs for Google's personalised web pages.

File finders

Many of the changes put into Vista, such as the Aero interface, are obvious from the moment you first switch the machine on.

Other changes are more subtle but could make it less of a chore to navigate around the Windows operating system.

A good example of this is the refinements Microsoft has made to Windows Explorer that many people use as their main way to navigate around their computer.

Opening up a location, such as where you store your pictures, will make Explorer populate the top taskbar with common menu choices. The options you are presented with are tuned for what you are dealing with.

It might help speed up many common tasks and means you don't have to play around with menus to navigate your way to what can be elusive.

Drive time

Welcome changes have also been made to the way you can get around Windows.

Before now, moving around Windows has often been a case of navigating down one directory tree and up another to move things around or get things done.

Vista changes this with the help of another context specific taskbar. Along this taskbar are listed all the hard drive locations you had to navigate past in order to reach your destination.

Clicking on the arrows on this bar opens up a list of other directories that hang off the same place.

Security

One of the many features that Microsoft is trumpeting in Vista is the improvements it makes to the security of your computer.

Over the last few years the forerunner to Vista, Windows XP, has been updated with a lot of add-ons and updates that try to make it less prone to being compromised.

Vista continues this trend and comes ready fitted with a few security programs including anti-spyware and a firewall.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 7, which ships with Vista, will also have on-board an anti-phishing system that tries to warn people when they stray on to a fake site and are about to unwittingly share confidential information with the bad guys.

Vista will also work hard to ensure that people keep their copy of Windows up to date as attackers are getting much better at exploiting unpatched loopholes.

Reports from beta testers suggest that Vista will also do a more comprehensive job of warning users when they are about to do something potentially dangerous.

Jaring: WiMAX expansion to begin in H2

JARING Communications Sdn Bhd is in the midst of expanding its mobile (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) WiMAX system sometime in the second half of this year.

The company is also planning to set up about 40 to 50 new base stations in addition to the 10 base stations they currently have.

“This is in tandem with our mobile WiMAX expansion. Subscribers can expect the system to be up and running earliest by the middle of next year,” said Jaring chief executive officer Dr Mohamed Awang Lah yesterday.

“The testing and certification process is expected to be ready by June or July this year,” he said, adding that the upgrading involved the base stations and equipment.

Mohamed, however, declined to unveil the cost of the whole process.

“There is a figure but nothing that we can released as yet,” he said.

Mohamed said each base station can accommodate about 1,000 to 1,500 subscribers.

Currently, the country’s first internet service provider (ISP) has about 4,000 wireless broadband subscribers in the Klang Valley. Mohamed sees is a huge untapped market that Jaring could explore in the Klang Valley alone.

Mohamed also commented briefly on Jaring’s separation with Mimos Bhd.

“We are in the process of doing some changes in share holdings, that’s all.

“Currently, all our assets belong to Jaring because over the years, we have accumulated quite a number of assets on our own,” added Mohamed.

He added that he was very optimistic with the company’s direction.

We are on the right track and in the right business. The infrastructure is there. All we need to do is expand. Besides, in the future cell phones, televisions, radio and whatever mode of communication will be running on the internet,” said Mohamed, adding that the company is comfortable with continuing with their present business mode.

Asked whether Jaring is looking into anything synergistic in the near future, Mohamed said, “Not at the moment. We are focusing on what we have and of course, the expansion plans.”

Jaring, reported to have a customer base of close to a million, is estimated to post a revenue of about RM100 million yearly, contributing as much as a third of Mimos’ revenue.

Formed in 1985, Mimos is one of the country’s leading research and development organisations specialising in information & communication technology and microelectronics, helped to introduce the Internet in Malaysia by managing the RangKom project (Rangkaian Komputer Malaysia or Malaysia Computer Network) in 1987.

In 1991, RangKom was turned into an Internet service provider, offering services to limited members of the public, and a year later, Jaring was launched as the nation's first Internet service provider.

In November 1996, Mimos was corporatised as a company under the Ministry of Finance with three core functions – reserch & development, national information technology policy development and business development.

Microsoft (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd managing director Yasmin Mahmood, who officiated the event at 8pm on Saturday, said that the launch was part of the worldwide effort to introduce the new OS to the world, which goes by the motto, “The WOW starts now”.

“I am proud to say that the Kuala Lumpur launch is definitely one of the best launches in the world,” she said.

Is the Wii Really Good for Your Health ?

A week after Nintendo's Wii debuted in November, the Wall Street Journal reported that the gaming console was leaving some users as sore as the gym often does. Unlike traditional hand-held video games, where users sit on the couch exercising little more than their thumbs, the Wii (pronounced "we" not "why") features digital sensors that let users virtually play the game. In Wii Sports, a game that comes with the console, users mimic the motions used in sports like bowling, tennis and baseball. In other words, the game may be virtual, but the physical exertion is very real.

So much so that, according to the Journal, gamers complained of "aching backs, sore shoulders — even something some have dubbed "Wii elbow." Nintendo spokeswoman Perrin Kaplan downplayed the report, saying the company hadn't received any complaints from users about soreness. "If people are finding themselves sore, they may need to exercise more," she said. "It was not meant to be a Jenny Craig supplement."

But that's where she may be wrong. Not only have some gamers started turning the Wii and other similar active gaming consoles into a new form of exercise, but medical researchers are touting their health potential for more than just weight loss. A research team at the University of Toronto is developing a "therapeutic video game" to treat children who suffer from hemiplegic cerebral palsy, a condition that can partially paralyze one side of the body. If the children regularly use their weaker side, their motor function can improve. The problem is getting the children to do so outside of therapy sessions. Active video games might do the trick, thought William Li, an undergraduate engineering student at the University of Toronto who is conducting research at the university's Bloorview Kids Rehab teaching hospital.

With university researchers, he devised a game console that requires the children to use their dominant hand to hold down a button on their chair. With the weaker hand, the children can play an active video game. "It's a lot of fun to use, and the movements are the types of things that might be promoted in physical therapy or occupational therapy," Li says. "[And] the kids don't have to feel different. This is a game they can take home and play with siblings and friends."

Wii's psychological impact may even speed up the recovery process. Mary Jane Zamora, who lives in Redondo Beach, Calif., has battled breast cancer since she was diagnosed in February 2005. After a round of chemotherapy before Christmas in December, she was too tired to get off the couch. Then her grown daughters brought over a Wii. Together they played bowling, tennis and golf. "It got a little exhausting," Zamora says, but she was hooked and began playing on her own every day. Soon after joining a local bowling league, she was named the league's Most Improved Player. "What this game did for me was encourage me that I could still do these kinds of things," she says. "It came around when I needed it. I can see where people could really benefit from being able to interact without having do to much physical exertion."

But weight loss is still probably the biggest health benefit the Wii will have for users. Active video games like the Wii can fight child obesity, according to a report published by the Mayo Clinic in the January issue of Pediatrics. In that study, researchers found that children burned three times as many calories playing "active" video games versus playing traditional hand-held video games. Because the study was done before the Wii debuted, researchers tested Sony's EyeToy and Microsoft's Xbox. But Lorraine Lanningham-Foster, the report's lead researcher, expects the Wii to have the same effect. "If children are up moving around versus sitting down, then they're going to burn more calories," she says.

In December Mickey DeLorenzo, a computer programmer in Philadelphia, hypothesized that he could lose weight by playing the Wii for 30 minutes a day. He lost nine pounds in six weeks and is on his way to becoming the next Jared of Subway fame. In January DeLorenzo signed a book deal, tentatively titled The Wii Workout and teamed up with Traineo.com, a social networking site for dieters and fitness buffs, to feature his new regime. "It's becoming something like a Richard Simmons show," says DeLorenzo, who's received dozens of fan emails. "People will write, 'You've inspired me to buy a Wii and start working out.'"

Two months after dismissing the Wii's exercising potential, Nintendo spokeswoman Perrin Kaplan now embraces it. "One of our hopes was that people would find a way to enjoy the Wii sitting on the couch or getting up and moving their body around," she says. "This huge fitness craze was more than we had anticipated."

A First Look at Windows Vista

WINDOWS VISTA: WHY NOBODY CARES

Back in the day, your operating system was a big deal. It was who you were. Mac vs. Windows was like Catholic vs. Protestant, or Republican vs. Democrat, and about as rational. Now it's somewhere down around Coke vs. Pepsi. Microsoft is still winning the battles — the iPod "halo effect" notwithstanding, Apple is hovering at about a 5% market share — but no one's getting worked up about the war. So many of the file-compatibility issues have been solved, and so much computing goes on in the browser anyway. So who cares?

That's one reason for the near-total non-excitement surrounding the launch of Windows Vista, the first new version in five years of the software that runs hundreds of millions of PCs. The other reason is that Vista is ... pretty good. It's not a disgrace, and it's not a masterpiece. It's not worth buying a new machine for Vista, and there's no reason to switch to it if you use a Mac, but it gets the job done. Not the stuff of which great headlines are made.

And now that I've drained all the interest out of this review, let's go to the features:

1. Vista looks pretty. The edges of the windows are now transparent, like little glass microscope slides. Vista — blatantly following the trend set by Apple — represents data as translucent and jewel-like and faintly glowing. Subtle shadows, gleams and animations enhance the illusion. It's just cosmetic stuff, but given how much time one spends there, it's nice when one's desktop doesn't feel like a soul-leaching cubicle. (To assuage the Mac faithful: yes, many of Vista's features are pilfered directly from Mac OS X, and in general Apple has shown itself to be far more efficient and innovative in the operating systems market. Done.)

2. Vista makes sense, more or less. Much of the challenge of creating a good operating system is design, not technology. Which means figuring out a visually logical way for users to get at all their information easily. Vista is creeping in that direction, with improved search functions and nicely built-in music and photo organizers — you can actually "tag" photos with keywords, which is very handy. Useful widgets like clocks and photo albums cluster happily at the edge of the screen like attentive waiters, happy to serve you.

What truly makes a great user interface is an ineffable internal logic, a set of consistent internal rules that one absorbs without their having to be stated (like in a manual, for example), and I don't see that quite yet in Vista. You don't always instinctively know where the back button will be, or the "close this window" button. If your desktop is overcrowded with windows, you can hit an icon that will line them all up for you, tilted at an angle, so you can pluck out the one that you need. Nice — but at the same time, it breaks with the visual metaphor of a flat desktop.

3. Vista is secure, or at least it's securer. If that's a word. Being a near-monopoly makes Windows a magnet for phishers, viruses, adware and other malware writers. So Microsoft has worked on that, mostly under the hood. I think what most impressed me were the built-in parental controls: you can decide when your kids will use Vista, what websites they can go to, what applications they can run, whom they can IM with, and so on. And if they try to break the controls, Vista will rat them out.

4. Vista is expensive and a bit of a resource-hog. There are two versions targeted at home users : Basic ($199, which is about what OS X costs) and Premium ($239). (Note that Basic doesn't give you that nice pretty translucent look, which is Vista's most immediately appealing feature.) Most people won't buy Vista at retail, but you'll feel the burn somewhere in there whenever you buy your next computer. For the Premium edition Microsoft recommends a 1Ghz processor and 1GB of RAM, as well as a respectable graphics setup, but I think you'll need quite a bit more power to get the full, smooth experience. The laptop Microsoft loaned me to test Vista had 2Ghz and 2GB, so be careful not to buy more Windows than you can run.

To sum up: Vista is a perfectly respectable new iteration of Windows. They've even, finally, come up with a decent way to make laptops sleep and wake up again, which XP was never very good at. The fact that it took Microsoft over five years and $6 billion dollars to create Vista is — and I mean this quite seriously — an embarrassment to the good name of American innovation, but it's perfectly fine.

Two closing thoughts. One, there's a lot of functionality built into Vista — look at the photo editor, which is integrated with the operating system and which works like a stripped-down version of the already-stripped-down Photoshop Elements. Isn't that the kind of anti-competitive integration that got Microsoft into anti-trust court last time around? (Not that they ever left: they're facing hundred-million Euro fines in Europe as we speak.)

And two, Vista's real test won't be some reviewer checking off features in his lonely office. It will come when millions of Vista users make their way out into the deep waters of the greater Internet ecology, where legions of Internet-based criminals will start banging away on its security features, looking for a way to fool it, break it or hijack it. Translucent borders are all well and good, but out there in the jungle, no one cares how pretty you are.

MALACCA: Portions of the buried ruins of Fortaleza D’Malacca or the mighty A’Famosa fortress built in 1512 will be brought to “life” for the world to see.

About 350m of the buried walls of the fortress will be reconstructed stone by stone to its original dimensions of 8m by 5m, said Commissioner of Heritage Prof Datuk Dr Siti Zuraina Abdul Majid.
She said the completed structure would encompass the city’s 11.3ha heritage site in Bandar Hilir.
“When completed, the fort will be one of the nation’s prominent historical structures and will completely transform Malaysia’s historical landscape. Visitors will literally be able to journey to the past and relive history.”
“It’s a very exciting project for us to be able to reconstruct the wall. Once completed, the fort will be able to impart the historical importance of that era,” she said.

Dr Siti Zuraina added that the Heritage Department, under the Culture, Arts and Heritage Ministry, would implement the project in stages, beginning from the ancient wall site in Bandar Hilir, which has been confirmed as the Middelburgh Bastion.
“However, existing buildings and other structures will not be touched,” she said.
“We will excavate and expose the southern side of the foundation of the fort’s walls and its six bastions before using laterite stones from Malacca’s Pulau Upeh to reconstruct the fort,” she added.

The department will also conserve and restore the 23 historical structures within the fort’s confines.
Plumbing: Pipes believed to have originated during the Dutch era were dug out.
“We expect to complete reconstructing the fort by the end of the Ninth Malaysia Plan,” she said.
Dr Siti Zuraina said the department had requested a special budget allocation from the Cabinet as the project was expected to be costly.
Presently, the department is using documents and paintings of the fort dating back to 1512 to determine its dimensions and design, but may require further documents from overseas sources.
“We might study the Galle Fort, which is fully intact in Sri Lanka, as it is a good example of how the fort would look like because they both share a similar history,” she added.

One can say that the new iPod shuffle has a stylish, uncomplicated design, with simple clean lines.

And it's a testament to Apple's skill at blending design with functionality that even the box can be regarded a work of art. Included with the shuffle are the customary white headphones, which produce decent sound quality.

Available only in matte silver, the 1GB shuffle comes with its white controls in a circular arrangement modelled after the iPod's click wheel.

This is the only memory capacity and colour available, so if you want a greater variety you should go for the iPod nano.

There are also two lights, one to show power on/off (and amount of battery charge), and one to indicate data transfer or errors.

Much smaller than its predecessor, the new iPod shuffle measures a tiny 4.1 x 2.7 x 1.1cm. I can't imagine any further reduction in size – doing so just wouldn't be practical.

The previous shuffle was all white, and IMHO had a rather plasticky shell. Being long and thin, it also felt very breakable, much like the iPod nano. Thankfully the new shuffle's design is more compact and stocky, and as such looks less likely to snap in your pocket.

So all's well then, at least in the visual department. But does it have the brains to back up its beauty?

In the field

Thankfully, it does. With an advertised battery life of up to 12 hours, you are guaranteed many hours of aural pleasure.

But according to Apple's website, the iPod shuffle takes four hours to fully charge. That's slower than the nano, and the same amount of time as the iPod video.

That doesn't make sense, as surely a smaller device (both physically and capacity-wise) should charge faster? However, the shuffle does a two-hour fast charge to 80% of the battery level, which should last you 9.6 hours.

I was anxious to test whether the lack of a screen would affect the shuffle's usability. But surprisingly, it didn't. In fact I liked not having a screen, because there was no temptation to be fussy and scroll through menus to find specific songs.

And the random play feature means that you listen to a wide range of music (it helps if you've loaded a wide range in the first place) without worrying over what to listen to next. But if you get tired of the shuffling, just flick the shuffle switch to play your songs in the order you synched them from iTunes.

In order to transfer songs from your computer, you must plug the iPod shuffle into the supplied docking module via its headphone jack.

This is also the only way to charge the battery, and so it means you can't listen to the iPod shuffle while it's charging.

Most common music file formats are supported (MP3, AAC, WAV, Audible, AIFF) but the iPod shuffle doesn't accept OGG and WMA music files.

The iPod shuffle was so easy to use because there are only five buttons (three for playback, two for volume control). It is an excellent portable music player, because it does what it's built to do exceedingly well.

The material used for the shell feels durable, and doesn't seem to scratch easily. However, I didn't try (or want) to scar its pretty face, and it managed to survive my everyday use.

A notable feature is the sturdy built-in clip at the back of the iPod shuffle, presumably because it's so light (15g!) and small that it might fall out of your pocket.

It's great because it enables you to attach it to your clothing, allowing for hands-free use. No need to fish it out of your pocket to use it, just tap the necessary buttons while it's hanging off your trouser pocket.

The supplied headphones produce crisp and clear sound, even when the iPod shuffle is cranked up to full volume (note: take the headphones out of your ears first, the maximum volume is very, very loud).

I'd even go so far to say they're capable of being used as emergency speakers, but I predict doing so on a regular basis would fry them in no time. It's also possible to hook the iPod shuffle up to a pair of external speakers, which is great is you're holding an impromptu party.

Other notes

Another useful feature is how the iPod shuffle automatically pauses the song you're playing if (deliberately or not) the headphones are yanked out or the player is turned off. It doesn't play songs unless the headphones are plugged in, which saves battery life.

When plugged into a computer, the iPod shuffle will appear as a removable storage device. Using iTunes, you can allocate the amount of space for data files/documents and songs.

Windows users need the latest version (7.0.2) to transfer songs; version 7 won't work. Neither will simply dragging-and-dropping MP3s to the iPod shuffle. Mac users will have no such problems with iTunes 7, however.

Verdict

At RM399, the iPod shuffle is a tad expensive compared to other portable music players available on the market, but if you want something with fuss-free usability, ultra-portability and elegant looks, the shuffle is your best bet.

That's the price of cool, I suppose.

Pros: Stylish and sturdy design; ergonomic; easy to use; long battery life; small and lightweight; built-in clip.

Cons: Only one capacity and colour available; a bit pricey; takes too long to charge.

MASAIRLINE Offer Fare Bonanza

The five million tickets Malaysia Airlines is offering at its travel fair in two weeks' time will see discounts of up to 70%.

Air tickets purchased at the Malaysia Airlines Travel Fair (MATF) will also allow a longer travelling time period compared with offers in previous years. Travellers will now have nine months to do so as the offer will be valid from Feb 24 to Sept 30.

Last year, the cheap tickets had to be used within four months.

According to industry sources, MAS is keeping its price list secret until the last minute to prevent competitors from “stealing its thunder”.

“A good indication of what the fares will be like is to look at the International Supersavers that it is offering on its website. You can be assured the MATF fares will match those on the Internet, if not even cheaper,” said a source.

At present, the cheapest fare for a trip to Hong Kong on the MAS website is RM700 while the lowest price offered for a Kuala Lumpur to Shanghai flight is RM850.

The MATF will be held from Jan 31 to Feb 6 and is a 'virtual fair' as tickets can be bought at all travel agents registered with MAS.

The MATF, which is into its fourth year, is part of MAS' turnaround strategy to increase revenue during the low season.

Malaysia Airlines commercial director Datuk Rashid Khan said the promotion fares would be in line with the national carrier's new fare structure, which was launched on Monday.

“We urge our customers to take advantage of this opportunity and plan their travels with us well in advance,” he said, adding that the deals were not available for certain dates that were super peak travelling periods.

In the 16 fare classes under the new MAS fare structure, travellers who planned their trips early would be assured of cheaper tickets.

For the MATF last year, MAS offered discounts of up to 70% on European routes and 75% for some Asean destinations.

It is also learnt that the national carrier would again impose the same conditions as last year, where it allowed one-way airfare for passengers to make their return journey from another city but made it expensive for those who wanted to change travelling dates.

MAS is expected to reveal the number of seats to be made available for popular destinations for MATF at a press conference on Jan 22.

Now Everyone Can Fly For Extra Long

KUALA LUMPUR: RM9.99 is the cheapest air ticket to Manchester, Huangzhou and Tianjin on AirAsia X – the new long-haul budget airline operated by Fly Asian Xpress (FAX) that was launched yesterday.

FAX founder and AirAsia chief executive officer Datuk Tony Fernandes said the new airline will start operations in July but passengers can book their tickets from next month.

He said the airline, whose tagline is “Now Everyone Can Fly Extra-long”, plans to buy 20 aircraft to service the various routes it had been given by the Government on Thursday.

Initially, the company will lease aircraft to start its operations, Fernandes told a press conference after the launch by Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy.

Also present was Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor.

The airline is considering buying either the Airbus A330 or the Boeing 777-300ER. The seat configuration will enable AirAsia X to carry about 400 passengers on each flight.

There will be two classes of seats – economy and super-economy.

“We will have extra-long seats for those who want comfort for long-haul flights, but of course it will cost more,” Fernandes said.

Like AirAsia, passengers will have to pay for their food as well as onboard entertainment.

FAX also signed a memorandum of understanding with AirAsia over the franchising of the AirAsia brand to the new airline. It is learnt that the Transport Ministry has granted AirAsia X landing rights at 36 international destinations in Asia, Europe and Australia. Among them are Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates, Melbourne and Osaka.

Chan said the Government was still looking at which airport in London to grant the airline landing rights, but it would not be Heathrow or Gatwick.

The other two London airports available are Stanstead and Luton. Both are low-cost carrier hubs.

FAX chief executive officer Raja Azmi Raja Razali said the first three flights, in July, would be to Manchester, Hangzhou and Tianjin.

On negotiations with Virgin group’s Sir Richard Branson and EasyGroup’s Sir Stelios Haji-loannou, Fernandes said it was still on-going, but declined to elaborate.

“I know the two men very well and we have been speaking about it for quite a while,” he added.

Dopod has thrown everything but the proverbial kitchen sink into its latest product, the 900, which S. SIVABALAN is only too excited to review.

THE Dopod 900 is a Pocket PC phone that has it all – it is based on the latest Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system, runs on the powerful Intel Bulverde 520MHz processor and has 3G, WiFi, a Qwerty keyboard, and digital camera.
After testing it for a week, I can only conclude that the 900 is bound to give more well known brand names such as O2, Hewlett-Packard and Palm a serious run for their money.

Dopod 900Nice design
The 900 is a clamshell that comes in a rather dull grey finishing with a black back cover – it looks simple and elegant, which is what professionals, its intended target, will appreciate.
Unfortunately, it’s not a pocket friendly device because it is bulky and heavy – it measures 81 x 127.7 x 25mm and weighs 285g.
The device is made up of two parts – a screen that rotates on two axes and a full Qwerty keypad. And the hinge looks and feels durable – I can safely say that it will last a long time.
The display is a huge 3.6in LCD screen with touchscreen capability. It can be orientated in either portrait or landscape mode depending on whether you plan to use it to talk or to message.
The keypad does not look out of place and feels good to use – something which only the Treo has managed to get it right so far.
The device also has handwriting recognition, which is handy when you want to input long messages.
Unlike the earlier Dopod 838, the 900 does not come with a silent mode button and instead only has a button to adjust volume.
Feature-packed
Microsoft has done a good job with Windows Mobile 5.0 as I did not face any system instability problems.
And with the fast Intel processor, I could easily run several programs without noticing any slowdowns. However, there was a short lag when switching the display from landscape to portrait mode.
Accessing programs was a breeze thanks to the onscreen buttons. And the onboard wireless manager made it easy to access all the wireless connectivity options on the device such as Bluetooth and WiFi – it felt almost like I was using a notebook.
And because it has WiFi, I could avoid using the costly 3G and GPRS services whenever I wanted to surf. The big VGA screen made surfing a pleasant affair, something I have not been able to do on a phone before.
The 900 has Windows Media Player 10 Mobile, which was great for managing and playing my songs.
However, I was rather disappointed with the 1.3-megapixel camera, as I just could not shoot a good picture – maybe it was just me.
In terms of memory, the 900 has 128MB ROM for storage space and it can be easily augmented with an SD or MMC card.
Phone performance
The 900 functions as a phone regardless of whether if the screen is facing outside or inside.
But when the screen is facing the inside, it is not possible to tell who is calling, which is a bummer. And I could not leave the screen facing outside because I was worried that the screen would be damaged by knocks.
Also, the Call button is placed on the side of the phone – pressing it while on a call, ends it – which accidentally happened to me several times.
On the plus side, the 3G video call worked fine on the phone and I could see and hear the other person clearly.
Conclusion
The Dopod 900 is a great all-in-one product and about the only feature that falls below par is the 1.3-megapixel camera.
It is a little on the large and bulky side but it is something that you can get used to over time and expect in a hybrid device.
Overall, the 900 is without a doubt a well-integrated product that has tons of features, which is why the manufacturer is calling it a subnotebook.
But unfortunately, it is also priced like one.
Pros: Excellent specs; VGA display; nice Qwerty keyboard; full connectivity options.
Cons: Heavy and bulky; camera could be better; expensive.

Maxis does broadband in Penang

KUALA LUMPUR: Maxis Communications Berhad (Maxis) has expanded its broadband service to Penang.
This will enable Internet connections of up to 768kbps in Tanjung Bungah, Bayan Baru, Bukit Jambul, Pulau Tikus and selected parts of Georgetown, with more areas to follow, according to Maxis.
Maxis chief executive officer, Datuk Jamaludin Ibrahim said, "We have the confidence in our product and will continue to build broadband hub coverage in town centres – where the need is greater – before extending it to the rest of the nation. Our plan is to have Klang Valley, Penang and Johor Bahru adequately provisioned with broadband by the first quarter of next year."
Maxis uses HSPDA (High Speed Data Packet Access), a high-speed upgrade of the 3G network, for residential broadband.
At speeds 3 times faster than current 3G connections and up to 15 times faster than traditional dial up, HSDPA offers consumers greatly improved Internet access to browsing, email, video streaming, online gaming and music downloads.
The company has spent RM5 million to deploy HSDPA across Penang on top of its 3G network investment in delivering affordable, reliable mobile broadband services to its customers.
It is expected that Maxis will invest some RM700 million to build out its broadband services over the next 3 years.
Two broadband packages bundled with home voice service are available, with monthly fees at RM68 and RM98 respectively, inclusive of modem rental.
The RM68 package offers speeds up to 384 kbps, while the latter offers speeds up to 768 kbps. There will be a one time RM100 activation fee and a RM88 installation charge.
Consumers can sign up for a Maxis Broadband at any Penang Maxis Centre and at selected Maxis Broadband dealers.

Sharing PDF documents gets easier

The newest version of Adobe’s document authoring and reading software, Acrobat 8, promises to make it easier and more secure for workgroups to collaborate and share Portable Document Format (PDF) files, inside and outside their organisations.
Targeted at professionals in the architecture, engineering, construction, information technology, legal, marketing and publishing industries, version 8 offers new features, such as the ability to merge multiple disparate files into a single PDF document and tools to permanently remove sensitive text, images, metadata or other information.
Additionally, users can also automatically convert Microsoft Outlook and Lotus Notes e-mail messages into PDF format with just the push of a button.
Converting complex, large-format documents, such as those authored in Autodesk’s AutoCAD software, is now also significantly faster and the newly created file size is much smaller, claims Adobe.
According to Raymond R. N. Lee, Adobe Systems Pte Ltd’s South-East Asia country manager, Acrobat 8 comes with the Acrobat Connect application, which enables users hold online meetings and share screenshots, audio and video files, as well as captured whiteboard images, in real-time sessions.
Adobe Connect is also available as a separate product.
The Acrobat family consists of Acrobat 8 Professional, Acrobat 8 Standard, Acrobat 8 Element and Acrobat 3D version 8.

Symantec to take web security to next level

Symantec Corp has unveiled the specifics of its new vision for next-generation web security, dubbed "Security 2.0."
Since last year the security vendor has been highlighting issues on the changes in the cybersecurity landscape and how these negatively affect businesses and individuals that go online.
While Security 2.0 was first mentioned during the Symantec Vision conference in May, the company has only now talked about how it would go about executing that new strategy.
"Security used to be about protecting machines and devices, but nowadays consumers need a different level of protection," John W. Thompson, Symantec Corp chief executive officer and chairman told the media during a recent briefing in Kuala Lumpur.
He said that although the world is heading towards a more digital lifestyle with Web 2.0, the success of that would not be possible without proper security measures in place.
Quoting several studies, Thompson said that consumers are becoming less confident in performing e-commerce transactions, which causes businesses to lose out in the end.
"People need to feel confident that their information is safe and that their transactions are secure, or else the digital lifestyle will not be as exciting," he said. "And we will not realise the full potential that new technologies bring to the connected world."
"Security 2.0 is about protecting individuals and their (online) interactions, which gives them confidence when they are online," he added.
Thompson said Security 2.0 would protect customers’ information, interaction and infrastructure through an ecosystem of products, services and partnerships.
New products, services
On the consumer side, Symantec is offering Norton Confidential, an online transaction security system which ensures that websites visited are legitimate and protects web-based transactions from malware or phishing attacks.
"Phishing and identity theft are the fastest-growing non-violent crimes in the world," Thompson said. "If customers of an online merchant are targeted, it could still damage the merchant’s reputation and a damaged brand might be impossible to rebuild."
As a solution, Symantec is offering Norton Confidential Online Edition, an enterprise version of the system targeted at financial institutions and e-commerce retailers.
"We have already approached a number of local merchants and found that there are loads of interest in this solution," said Symantec Asia South vice-president of sales Eric Hoh, adding that its adoption by local banks would soon happen.
Early next year, Symantec plans to release Norton 360 (previously known as Project Genesis), which bundles system security, transaction security, digital content security and PC optimisation into one complete consumer package.
For enterprises, it has announced the Symantec Mail Security 8300 Series, which aims to reduce risks associated with information coming in and out of enterprises via e-mail.
The solution comes with integrated content filtering that protects against data leakage while ensuring compliance with external regulations and internal corporate policies.
In addition to these products, the company is also offering, through the Symantec Global Services, a host of IT risk management consulting, education and support services that help customers assess and manage risks to security, availability, performance and compliance.
Securing partnerships
On the partnership side, Symantec has joined hands with VeriSign to offer a new service called the VeriSign Identity Protection Authentication, which aims to combat the growing threat of consumer identity theft and fraud on the Internet.
Targeted at financial institutions, online retailers and end-users, the service will also be integrated into Norton Confidential in the future, Thompson said.
"Recently, we have also established the Accenture and Symantec Security Transformation Services, which is a joint organisation comprising of security experts from both companies aimed at helping businesses build and implement data security solutions," he added.
Thompson said the organisation is focused on security compliance, monitoring and management and secure application development.
"The security landscape is always changing, so 18 months from now, the same products and techniques may not be as effective," he said.
"But the Security 2.0 vision is not only about products. What we hope to achieve is to get private and public sectors, businesses and the government to collaborate to improve knowledge and create awareness of the best security practises and policies," he said.
Thompson was also in town to discuss the Malaysian-mooted International Multi-lateral Partnership Against Cyber-Terrorism (Impact) initiative with Government representatives.
He told In.Tech that details of the discussion would only be revealed in February or March.
